The Texas Longhorns are back-to-back NCAA Softball National Champions after sweeping Texas Tech in the Women’s College World Series Championship Series. The Longhorns scored two runs in the 5th inning to take a 2-1 lead and never looked back, winning 4-1.
Longhorns ace Teagan Kavan got the final six outs in the win. The UT star has named WCWS MOP. She is the first player to win the honor two years in a row.
In the first championship series rematch in 22 years, UT only needed two games this year to oust the Red Raiders. Texas has now beaten Tech star pitcher NiJaree Canady three times in five WCWS title series games.
The Red Raiders got the scoring started in the third inning when Lauren Allred’s single second scored Mihyi Davis. With Canady cruising it started to look like we’d be going to a winner-take-all Game 3.
But the Longhorns took the lead in the top of the 5th inning. After Reese Altmeyer and Ashton Maloney reached base, Canady would intentionally walk Katie Stewart to load the bases. Two runs would score when a Viviana Martinez fielder’s choice ended with a Hailey Toney throwing error.

Texas added some insurance in the top of the seventh inning thanks to a leadoff home run by Kayden Henry. Alisa Sneed, who pinch-ran for Katie Stewart following her single, came around to score the fourth run on a Leighann Goode single to right.
With a one-run lead and six outs for the title, Mike White called on Kavan to get the final six outs. She blew the Red Raiders away, getting five strikeouts in the final six batters, to win the national championship.

Teagan Kavan never gave the Red Raiders hope, striking out five of the last six Tech batters in the game.
Texas adds insurance runs
A Kayden Henry homer to lead off the inning and a Leighann Goode RBI single have given the Horns a little cushion heading to the bottom of the seventh inning. Texas is three outs away from the title.
Teagan strikes out the side
Texas coach Mike White inserted ace Teagan Kavan to close out the final six outs of the game (possibly the season). She’s halfway there after blowing away Tech in the 6th inning. Kavan got two swinging strikeouts and one looking. The Horns are now three outs away from back-to-back national championships.
Kavan in for Texas
As expected, if UT got a late lead Texas coach Mike White wouldn’t hesitate to go to star ace pitcher Teagan Kavan. That is happening. Kavan needs six outs to win the title.
Glove saves Tech
Kaiah Altmeyer smashed a ball to left centerfield with one out. It looked like it would hit the wall, but Red Raiders outfielder Logan Holleman robbed Altmeyer to kill the rally. It was Holleman’s second big catch of the night.
Gutierrez pitches her best inning
Seemingly fired up by Texas grabbing the lead in the top of the fifth inning, Citlaly Gutierrez pitched her best inning of the game. The senior mowed down the Red Raiders hitters to send the game to the final two innings.
Texas takes lead on Error
With the bases loaded after intentionally walking slugger Katie Stewart, Viviana Martinez slapped a two-strike pitch to the shortstop Hailey Toney, who over threw third baseman Taylor Pannell. Two runs scored to give UT a 2-1 lead.
Gutierrez ends rally
After freshman relief pitcher Hannah Wells loaded the bases, Texas coach Mike White went back to starting pitcher Citlaly Gutierrez. The senior got Mihyi Davis to line out to centerfield ending the threat.
Wells now pitching for Texas
Longhorns starter Citlaly Gutierrez has been replaced by freshman Hannah Wells (who just had an at bat). Wells hasn’t pitched much in the postseason, but she is UT’s third starter.
Horns strand two in 4th
Texas finally got to Canady a little bit. Reese Atwood doubled down the left field line and Leighann Goode was hit by a pitch. But Canady got Hannah Wells popped up to second to end the inning.
Tech Takes the Lead
UT starter Citlaly Gutierrez has been playing with fire through the first three innings, allowing baserunners in each frame. Texas finally got burned as Lauren Allred’s single to second scored Mihyi Davis.
Another shutout inning for Canady
Texas’ only baserunner was Kayden Henry to lead off the game. Since then, UT hasn’t reached base.
Red Raiders threaten, but don’t score
Gutierrez allowed a walk and a hit in the second inning, but was able to get two outs on a strikeout and a ground out to end the threat.
Canady perfect 2nd
The Longhorns went down in order 1-2-3 in the second inning to Red Raiders ace NiJaree Canady.
Gutierrez works around hit batter
Texas starter Citlaly Gutierrez hit Mihyi Davis. Davis then stole second. But the Tech centerfielder was stranded at second.
UT strands runner in 1st Inning
Kayden Henry led off the game with a single. But that is all Tech pitcher NiJaree Canady would allow.
Texas goes with Gutierrez
ESPN has confirmed Texas coach Mike White will start Citlaly Gutierrez. The ESPN crew seemed really surprised, but we predicted the move this morning.
