Austin Independent School District Police Chief Wayne Sneed was injured in a motorcycle accident while participating in an “official motorcade operation” around 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday, the Austin Police Department said.
During the board meeting on Thursday night, trustee Kathryn Whitley Chu said Sneed was coming from an Austin high school graduation.
“This was coming from a joyful occasion where the superintendent’s daughter graduated and he was on the way to celebrate her,” Whitley Chu said.
Officials said two police motorcycles were involved in the collision, which occurred near U.S. 290 westbound and the MoPac service road ramp near Southwest Parkway.
Sneed was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Whitley Chu said Sneed is on his way to recovery but that it is “going to be a long road.”
“On behalf of the Austin ISD family to Chief Sneed and his family, we are all praying for a speedy recovery,” Whitley Chu said. “We are with you and we love you.”
An AISD spokesperson told KUT News they are hopeful Sneed will make a strong recovery and that the district remains “grateful to the first responders who supported our team after the accident and our community who has offered their support.”
AISD has not provided further details on Sneed’s health.
Sneed has served as Austin ISD’s police chief since 2022. Before he was selected chief, Sneed worked in Austin ISD’s mental health and community engagement unit.
APD said the investigation is ongoing.
