LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Lubbock-Cooper ISD is proposing a new feeder system that would keep students who attend the same middle school together through high school.
The district says student groups are currently broken apart as they age through the district. The new proposal aims to account for new growth and give students stability as they transition from middle to high school, but one parent argues the map would do the opposite.
Proposed changes
The district is proposing a move from separate attendance zone maps for middle and high schoolers to one unified map.
Under the proposal, all students who live in the gray shaded area below would attend Laura Bush Middle School and Lubbock-Cooper High School. All students who live in the blue shaded area below would attend Lubbock-Cooper Middle School and Liberty High School.

If passed, the changes would take effect for the 2027-2028 school year. Middle schoolers who have to change schools and want to do so early can do that this year.
Elementary school boundaries would not change under the plan.
Current system
The district currently uses separate attendance zones for middle and high school. Some students who attend Laura Bush end up at Lubbock-Cooper High School, while others end up at Liberty.

The district says the proposed map most closely reflects current middle school lines, with modifications to ensure equitable distribution of students and resources.
Parent concerns
Not all parents are happy with the proposal. Lubbock-Cooper parent Cassandra Rosas posted about the proposal on social media, receiving several comments.
Rosas lives in an area where she will have to drive her daughter with disabilities to the interstate to reach high school in a few years. She is also concerned for neighbors directly to the west of her, who will already have to start making that drive in a year if they have middle schoolers.
“You know it’s more than just lines on a map and dollar signs. Like these are actual people and actual children and families. I can only imagine if you’re a single parent or a parent who can’t drive. You know some people choose to live a block from the school because they have to. So, I don’t know logistically, how it’s going to work,” Rosas said.
Rosas also shared concerns about the district’s communication about the proposal. She said she received an email, but her husband did not. She is concerned parents are only now hearing about this instead of being able to give input at an earlier stage.
“I kind of just sat there for a second and I started reading, like trying to figure out when the dates change, you know, when this is implemented, how it’s going to be implemented. Should we be grandfathered in? Are all of my kids going to be switching schools? Is it just going to be one of my children? And as the information goes on, you can see that this is more of a, I know it says it’s a proposal, but it seems a little bit more precise than just a proposal at this point,” Rosas said.
Feedback Form
The district answers many of those questions on its website and is asking parents to submit feedback through an online form before Thursday. Rosas said she fears that feedback will not make much of a difference.
The district says it is actively reviewing data, compiling community questions and developing a plan to address inquiries in the coming days as it works to best serve all students.
