College football season is rapidly approaching, which means high school recruiting will also soon kick into high gear.
Major recruiting outlets ESPN, 247 Sports and On3/Rivals have released team rankings for the class of 2027, and area colleges are listed at many different points. In one of the nation’s recruiting hotbeds, a pair of SEC schools is dominating, while some Big 12 schools have some work to do before the early signing period begins in December.

Texas A&M and Oklahoma swept the top-two rankings across the three outlets. The Aggies have five five-star commits, and the Sooners have two, per On3/Rivals. Both schools have depth in their 2027 recruiting classes with multiple four-star recruits, per 247 Sports and On/3 Rivals. According to ESPN, Oklahoma’s top defensive prospect is Argyle Liberty Christian linebacker Cooper Witten, the son of former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten.
Texas Tech‘s class is rated highly by On3/Rivals, but falls outside the top 10 for ESPN and 247 Sports. The Red Raiders have a commitment from ESPN’s No. 1 overall prospect in Texas, Cedar Hill defensive tackle Jalen Brewster. Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire, of course, was in the same role at Cedar Hill from 2003-2016.
SMU was not ranked in ESPN’s top 20 and fell outside the top 50 for 247 Sports. There should be an infusion of talent for the Mustangs soon though, as On/3 Rivals ranks their 2026 transfer portal class No. 25. Entering his fifth season, head coach Rhett Lashlee will look to lead SMU back to the College Football Playoff.
