AUSTIN (KXAN) – The Texas Longhorns are looking to add to their record number of trips to the College World Series when they open Super Regional play Saturday night at 7 p.m. against Oregon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

Texas made their 38th and most recent trip to Omaha in 2022. In 2023 they lost a heart breaking game three in the Super Regional at Stanford and failed to get out of the Regional the past two years. In all, Texas has appeared in 13 Super Regionals and won 11 of them.

For 2nd year head coach Jim Schlossnagle, he’s competing in his 10th Super Regional as a head coach and trying to win it for the 8th time. “I think that it’s one of the hardest things in sports is to win a super regional in baseball.” said Schlossnagle. “It’s that tough, you have two teams trying to reach the pearly gates of college baseball which is Omaha, you have shrunken pitching staffs, everybody is locked into every pitch, they’re really hard to do.”

For the Oregon Ducks, they are looking for just their second trip to the College World Series and the first since 1954. This also marks the first time these programs have ever met.

“It’s the kind of stuff you play for,” said Oregon senior outfielder Drew Smith. “Playing in front of a great crowd and in front of great people, I’m super thrilled and super excited to be a part of it. We came here to win two games and it’s going awesome to do that at a very historic place like this and I’m just ready to get after it.”

Texas will go with their All-American pitcher Dylan Volantis on Saturday. The sophomore from Los Angeles is 9-1 with a 1.94 earned run average in 15 appearances, 14 of those starts. Schlossnagle would not commit to naming a starter beyond game one.

Oregon will counter with right hander Will Sanford who has a 9-2 record and 3.46 earned run average in 16 starts. Offensively, Oregon is lead by Smith who has a .332 batting average and leads the team with 15 home runs and 61 rbi.

Game two is scheduled for 8:00 pm on Sunday evening and then if a game three is necessary, that Monday time will be announced on Sunday.
