A North Texas family and Fort Worth firefighters are mourning the loss of a man who served the City of Fort Worth for more than 30 years.
The Fort Worth Fire Department announced in a social media post the passing of firefighter Todd Brook, who died at the age of 60.
In a statement, the department described Brook as “an exemplary firefighter and leader, but he also embodied everything that came with being a senior man in every aspect of his life.” He was known as someone colleagues relied on for “old school” guidance, whether in the fire service or in life, and was praised for his grit and determination.
“Todd was the fireman you wanted stepping off the truck with you when you rolled up and knew you were staring down a good one,” the department said.
Brook’s death comes just days after his family shared his final wish publicly with WFAA. He had been receiving end-of-life care at his home in Glen Rose, surrounded by family, after outliving an initial prognosis of three to six months following a cancer diagnosis last October.
According to his wife, Jennifer Brook, he was unable to speak or open his eyes but could still respond in small ways. She said he made it clear he wanted to continue spreading a message that was important to him.
That message was not about saving his own life, but hers.
Years before his cancer diagnosis, Jennifer Brook had been diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease and would need a transplant. Todd Brook had hoped to be her donor before his illness made that impossible. Instead, he urged others to consider becoming living donors.
Jennifer Brook said she remains hopeful someone will step forward, not only for her but for others in need of transplants.
She is among an estimated 90,000 people in the United States waiting for a kidney transplant. Data from UNOS, the United Network for Organ Sharing, shows that living donors account for about 20-25 percent of kidney transplants, while wait times for deceased donor organs can range from three to seven years. Government data also indicates an estimated 13 people die each day while waiting for an organ transplant.
Before his death, Todd Brook encouraged people to consider registering through the Living-Donor Transplant program at UT Southwestern in Dallas.
The Fort Worth FD said his legacy will not be forgotten and extended condolences to his family, asking the community to help honor his final wish by supporting the search for a kidney donor for his wife.
