Reserve infielder Shylien Brister became the first Texas softball player to enter the NCAA transfer portal in two years Saturday when the sophomore announced on social media her intentions to leave.
Schools can start signing players from the portal on Monday.
Brister did not see the field this season for Texas, which wrapped up a second consecutive national championship Thursday with a 4-1 win over Texas Tech in Oklahoma City. As a freshman in 2025, the Houston Clear Brook product appeared in 28 games with nine starts for an injury-plagued middle infield that lost starting shortstop Vivi Martinez to a season-ending knee injury.
The infield looks like a concern for head coach Mike White and the Longhorns next season. Martinez is expected to return for her redshirt senior season, but starting second baseman Leighann Goode is out of eligibility. Caigan Crabtree, who had 12 at-bats in 11 appearances as a freshman this season, is the only player on the roster eligible to return who played some second base.
