The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles announced on Tuesday, June 2 new rules were in effect statewide in relation to commercial automated vehicles, also known as autonomous vehicles (AVs). As part of those rules, the state department has created a public complaint process for those looking to voice “serious public safety concerns” involving driverless vehicles.
The update comes after the Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 2807 back in 2025, with that law taking effect on September 1, 2025. Under that legislation, lawmakers approved the creation of a statewide regulatory framework applicable to commercial AV operations on Texas roadways. Those companies are required to have an active authorization approved and issued by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, per the announcement.
After both the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles and the Texas Department of Public Safety adopted their respective administrative rules, they became enforceable after a 90-day authorization period, per state documents.
Those latest resources includes an AVs search platform, allowing Texans to research various driverless vehicle operators by the company name, address, AV authorization number or U.S. Department of Transportation number. Alongside that database, Texans can submit and track any complaints filed regarding those services.
“Under state law, TxDMV is responsible for issuing automated vehicle authorizations and administering enforcement related to authorization use compliance,” Tuesday’s release said. “The Texas Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement agencies retain authority for on-road safety enforcement and oversight of traffic law compliance.”
