Four key design projects were unanimously approved during the May 18 Fort Worth Art Commission meeting.
An artist or a representative of each of the projects presented their plans to the commissioners during the two-hour meeting, conducted by chair Philip Newburn.
The art commission, appointed by the city council, oversees implementation of the Fort Worth Public Art master plan.
Carol Acedo of Invizion Design Inc. presented the final design for an art installation at Fire Station #43 on 2200 Walsh Ranch Parkway in far west Fort Worth. Acedo’s design features backlit panels and LED lighting to complement her metal layered installations of a cow pasture scene with onlooking firefighters.
Felici Asteinza and Joey Fillastre of Milagros Collective showed off their preliminary design for murals and other art pieces to become part of the fencing for a bridge on 425 W. Everman Parkway in south Fort Worth.
Asteinza and Fillastre said they hope to include a community engagement activity as part of the project.
“I think you’re taking what’s a pretty utilitarian space and turning it into something special, which is great,” Commissioner Maggie Adler said. “That’s what we want to do.”
Karl Unnasch, who has produced installations mostly in Wisconsin and Minnesota, took part in the meeting virtually. He presented a preliminary design for art to be installed along Ray White Road from Kroger Drive to Bear Creek in far north Fort Worth.
Unnasch said that, though his art installation will be made of glass, his plan includes extensive measures to help it withstand environmental conditions and vandalism.
Kat Warwick presented her final design and also smaller scale examples of her stone sculpture plan for Fire Station #37 at 10600 Alta Vista Road in far north Fort Worth.

The sculpture will be placed on fire station grounds, and the sides will represent services and missions of the station and its firefighters.
In the public comment portion of the meeting, Russ Fuller, from far north Fort Worth, submitted his support for Unnasch’s Ray White Road design and Warwick’s Fire Station #37 design.
Upcoming community installations include a Meacham corridor project, to begin in early June. Another at Eastchase Parkway was scheduled for late May.

In addition, a project at the South Main Street underpass is on hold due to city repairs to the bridge and nearby roadways, Commissioner Alida Labbe said.
