Starting June 8, Plano residents can pick up their library holds at Liberty Recreation Center — no separate trip to a library branch required. A ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. will mark the opening of the second Plano Public Library Book Locker, a signature blue kiosk that lets cardholders grab reserved items while they’re already at the rec center.

The setup is straightforward: PPL cardholders select Liberty Recreation Center as their pickup location through the library app or online catalog, and when their item is ready, they have seven days to grab it from the locker. Most items can also be returned on-site, with check-in processed within 48 hours.

How It Started

The first Book Locker launched at the Sam Johnson Recreation Center for Adults 50+ in June 2025, funded through a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services via the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. The Liberty location expands the program to serve residents of all ages and marks a second partnership between Plano Public Library and the city’s recreation department.

“We are excited to once again partner with our Plano Library team to bring Book Lockers to Liberty Recreation Center,” said Assistant Director of Recreation Gregg Gagnon. “This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to serving the citizens of Plano and is a great partnership that strengthens our community and expands access to valuable resources for residents.”

Funded by the Community

The new lockers at Liberty are funded by the Plano Library Friends, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that backs the library through fundraising, advocacy and volunteer work. The organization directs donated dollars toward pilot programs and initiatives that extend library services beyond what standard funding covers.

“These lockers are just one example of how community support can expand opportunities for learning, connection and discovery across Plano,” said Emily Moore, president of Plano Library Friends. “We invite residents to join us — whether through donations or becoming a Friend at planolibraryfriends.org — to help us continue bringing impactful initiatives like this to life.”

PPL cardholders can update their preferred pickup location through the library app or the online catalog ahead of the June 8 opening.
