MANHATTAN, Kan. (KCTV) – Kansas State Athletic Director Gene Taylor made public his disdain for a decision levied by a Texas judge on Monday.
Early Monday morning, judge Ken Curry ruled in Lubbock County Court that Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby would be granted a preliminary injunction that prevents the NCAA from punishing him for violating its rules on sports gambling.
Court documents alleged that Sorsby bet approximately $90,000 on professional and college sports, including games in 2022 for the Indiana Hoosiers while he was a backup quarterback for the team.
Taylor, in an exclusive interview with Yahoo! Sports, did not hold back in his disapproval of the judge’s decision.
“It’s f****** bulls***,” Taylor told Yahoo!’s Ross Dellenger. “I know the kid has a (gambling) problem. Well, get well and focus on your problem. It is absolutely devastating for him to be able to play when every other sport, no matter the level, deems an athlete ineligible or they are punished severely for betting on their team.”
Sorsby was one of the most highly-coveted players in the transfer portal this past offseason and reportedly agreed to a $5 million NIL deal with Texas Tech following multiple seasons at Cincinnati.

Dellenger reported that Taylor and several other college athletic directors have considered whether they should participate in games with Texas Tech moving forward. The Red Raiders’ athletic department released a statement supporting Sorsby’s eligibility reinstatement on Monday.
“As we have said before, we do not believe that the circumstances of Brendan’s case warranted permanent ineligibility,” Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt said in a statement shared Monday. “As he returns to our football program, we remain committed to supporting Brendan’s recovery and ensuring his compliance with the court’s order.

“A comprehensive support structure, including clinical care, monitoring and compliance checks, will remain fully in place for the duration of Brendan’s time as a student at Texas Tech.”
