Those with a fear of the ocean should probably steer clear of Whalefall, the new movie about a man swallowed whole by a sperm whale.

A trailer for Whalefall (in theaters Oct. 16) shows the unlikely — but not impossible — event in excruciating detail, as Austin Abrams‘ scuba diver and a squid are caught amid a whale’s attack and trapped inside the massive animal’s belly.

“Following the death of his father (Josh Brolin), Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams) goes diving off the central Coast of California in search of his remains, but is swallowed by a massive sperm whale,” reads an official synopsis for the 20th Century Studios film.

“While trapped inside its belly with only one hour of oxygen left, Jay comes to realize that the hard-earned lessons his father imparted may be the key to his escape,” it concludes.

“I can teach you things. I will give you all the tools,” Brolin, 58, can be heard telling Abrams in the teaser, the majority of which is spent underwater as the diver contends with the terrifying, 60-ton predator.

Whalefall is directed by Brian Duffield, who co-wrote the script with Daniel Kraus, the author behind the 2023 novel of the same name. The survival thriller costars Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd.
