A rising pop artist has called out Houston’s interactive, immersive art installation and venue, Meow Wolf, claiming the venue acted in a misogynistic manner toward her and her team and limited her production.
Underscores, known for her genre-blending of hyperpop and electronic music, performed at the art installation and music venue Meow Wolf on June 6. Before her show, she apologized to her Houston fans, explaining that she wouldn’t be able to perform with her usual level of production because of the venue.
“Full disclosure,” Underscores wrote in an Instagram Story. “We won’t have full production tonight as the venue can’t accommodate it. They’ve honestly been very difficult to work with and have either been rude, misogynistic to my team or just don’t know what’s going on.”
In the post, she also assured fans that she would return to Houston so they could ultimately get the full experience of her live show. Underscores current shows performing her album U, featuring synced interactive light sticks called “U-LIGHTS” given to fans that are used for specific songs and moments throughout the show.
Underscores gave no specifics on what the “misogynistic” behavior was, but after the show, she clarified some of her claims against Meow Wolf.
“I wanna clarify tho the general venue staff have ultimately been very nice, accommodating, and oriented toward solutions,” she wrote after the show, urging fans not to direct any vitriol towards the staff working the actual venue. “These problems are coming primarily from upper management.”
The show itself seems like it was well-received, but there were some problems. Fans on TikTok cited long VIP lines and the venue’s small size as major problems. Additionally, the fire alarm went off during Underscores’ performance, which caused the performance to be put on pause while the fire department gave the all clear.
Still, fans were able to experience an intimate concert despite some of the hiccups during the show. The tumultuous show resulted in fans who attended making “I survived Underscores 2026 show at Meow Wolf” posts.
Meow Wolf is a trippy art installation first and foremost that hosts musicians and DJs, but it is a smaller venue. The Theta Theater, Meow Wolf Houston’s dedicated live music venue, can accommodate 400 people for a concert. The full Radio Tave exhibit can hold up to 750 people for larger events. Houston rap legends Paul Wall and Lil Keke are among the artists who have performed at Meow Wolf Houston since it opened in 2024.
Meow Wolf told Chron they have spoken with Underscores and her team and have come to an understanding so that they can continue to improve as a live music venue.
“Underscores is an incredible live experience, and we apologize to the artist and any fan who felt the show fell short,” Meow Wolf said in a statement sent to Chron. “Thanks to Underscores’ team for discussing the matter with our team afterward, so we can keep improving. Meow Wolf has long hosted artists from around the world, and we remain committed to being a great partner to musical talent.”
