EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A suspicious package led to the evacuation of the El Paso County Courthouse during the morning hours of Tuesday, June 10, according to Lt. Robert Torrez with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 8:50 a.m., courthouse security personnel received a suspicious package. As a precautionary measure, officials evacuated the courthouse to “ensure the safety of all individuals inside.”

The evacuation took about 16 minutes, Torrez told the media. During the incident, people were moved to a designated cooling area within the county campus.

The El Paso Police Department Bomb Squad responded to the scene and assisted in rendering the item “safe.” After the area was secured, the Crime Scene Unit took the package into custody for further examination.

A photo from the scene showed an El Paso County Sheriff’s Office vehicle blocking traffic at the intersections of San Antonio Street and Campbell Street, as well as San Antonio Street and Kansas Street.

By about 11:10 a.m., KTSM crews at the scene observed people returning to the courthouse as authorities began allowing personnel back inside.

Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.

The courthouse has since resumed normal operations and is open during regular business hours. Individuals who missed scheduled court appointments are advised to contact their attorney, court reporter, or court administrator for guidance regarding rescheduling or additional information.

The temperature in El Paso at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday morning had reached 91 degrees, according to the National Weather Service of El Paso.

County Judge Samaniego released a statement, thanking law enforcement officials.

“The safety and well-being of everyone in our facilities remains our highest priority. We
want to thank law enforcement officials for their rapid and professional response in
addressing the situation, securing the area, and working diligently to ensure the safety of
all individuals. Their quick response helped maintain order and allowed for the safe
relocation of these individuals to designated areas. We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to our partner agencies, including the Office of Emergency Management and Sun Metro, for their assistance during this incident.”
