LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Texas Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt said the school supports quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s continued recovery and is not involved in the lawsuit that led to a court ruling affecting his eligibility.
In a statement, Hocutt said Sorsby has not played a down for the Red Raiders and will miss the first two games of the 2026 season under the terms of the ruling. Hocutt said Texas Tech will evaluate Sorsby’s “recovery, compliance and readiness” going forward under a clinical and compliance plan the school put in place before the ruling.
Hocutt said Texas Tech did not file or fund Sorsby’s lawsuit against the NCAA, describing it as the legal action of “a young man in treatment for a clinically diagnosed addiction” who sought relief in court.
Hocutt also pushed back on criticism of the decision, saying “integrity” applies both to college sports and to how schools treat athletes seeking help. He said the university believes keeping Sorsby in the Texas Tech community provides the best chance for ongoing support, citing clinical care, monitoring and outpatient therapy.
Hocutt said removing Sorsby from that environment “does not protect anyone,” adding that Texas Tech will continue to be transparent and “put our students first.”
