In 1999, former President George H.W. Bush struck the ceremonial first tee shot to inaugurate the opening of Shadow Hawk Golf Club. Nearly three decades years later, the Houston-area-based club is back in full swing, ready to host more big names to play their prestigious course.
On Tuesday, Escalante Golf, a golf property development firm based in Fort Worth, announced the completion of a two-year regrassing and renovation project at Shadow Hawk in Richmond.
Upgrades to the club, led by architect Greg Muirhead, who was also involved in the original construction, took nearly two years to complete. The renovations included restoring and refining green contours, slopes and surrounding features. The tee boxes were planted with grass known for its high tolerance to drought and heat.
The fairways, approaches and green collars were covered with TifTuff Bermudagrass, while the greens were converted to TifEagle Bermuda. Both grass types are highly engineered, drought-resistant hybrid turfs developed by the University of Georgia. Costs for the completed work were not disclosed, but a regrassing and renovation project of this scale typically costs well into the tens of millions of dollars.
“With this renovation, we’ve honored the original vision of Shadow Hawk while making the necessary investments to ensure the course presents a premium playing experience for decades to come,” Shadow Hawk Golf Club general manager Mike Shoelen said in a statement. “Combined with our limited membership and commitment to exceptional conditions, this positions Shadow Hawk as one of the most distinctive and private golf experiences not just in Houston but in the state of Texas.”
“Shadow Hawk’s membership is intentionally capped at just 300 golf members, making it one of the most exclusive private clubs in Houston,” said Karie Rogers, Shadow Hawk Golf Club’s membership director. “That limited membership allows us to deliver an exceptional golf experience, with amazing access to the course, and a highly personalized club environment that is increasingly rare in the Houston market.”
Escalante Golf owns 26 golf properties across 17 states, having acquired Shadow Hawk from Redstone in 2013 as part of a four-club portfolio deal. Their portfolio includes notable locations such as Blackhorse Golf Club in Cypress, Black Hawk Golf Club in Richmond, and the Golf Club of Houston in Humble, which hosted the Houston Open until 2020.
