Now that we’re into November, we’re all eagerly awaiting the bright holiday lighting displays to take over the the city. From intergalactic light shows from a galaxy far far away, to luminous ice skating rinks parked right in the middle of downtown, Houston: the holidays will soon light up the city in constellations of Christmas lights.

In store for Houston this week, is an all-natural type of light show: the appearance of the Beaver Supermoon. Set to make an appearance in the night sky this mid week, the Beaver Supermoon will be the second-to-last supermoon of 2025 and the closest supermoon of the year!

The name traces back to the time of the fur trade in North America, coinciding with the time of year that beavers would hole up in their lodges with their caches of food and when trappers would have to secure beaver pelts ahead of coldest winter.

Over time, various cultures and groups have called the November supermoon other names as well, including: “Frost Moon”, “Digging Moon”, “Rutting Moon”, and “Freezing Moon”.

The term “supermoon” itself refers to a perigean Full Moon, or the occurrence of a Full Moon at the closest point of its orbit to Earth.

Of the three supermoons of 2025, the Beaver Supermoon will be the year’s closest. What that means is that its orbit will be closer than any of the other supermoons at 22,1817 miles from Earth – which is far, but looks cool!

When to see the Beaver Supermoon?

According to the Almanac, the best time to see the Beaver Supermoon will be on the evenings of Tuesday, November 4, and Wednesday, November 5. The supermoon is set to reach peak illumination at 7:19 am CST on Wednesday, November 5, but at the time it will be beneath the horizon, so the Tuesday and Wednesday evenings are your best bet!

With all cosmic phenomenon, the best place to watch the stars would be somewhere away from city lights. That said, you can find stellar angles of the Beaver Supermoon in Houston as one of its spacious parks including the following: Buffalo Bayou Park, Brazos Bend State Park, Eleanor Tinsley Park, and Terry Hershey Park.

The Beaver Supermoon is the second of three supermoons to grace our skies this year. The final will be the Cold Moon supermoon on December 4, 2025.
