IRVING, Texas (KCBD) — The Big 12 Conference said Thursday it is reviewing concerns raised by the Texas Attorney General’s Office after it received a letter warning of potential legal action if the conference pursues certain options under its bylaws involving Texas Tech.
The statement, issued on behalf of Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark, came as the conference’s executive board met to discuss next steps related to the Texas Tech football program and QB Brendan Sorsby’s ongoing eligibility dispute.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office sent a letter to Big 12 officials earlier Thursday, saying sanctions against Texas Tech for continuing to support Sorsby could violate antitrust laws and expose the league to significant financial liability. The Big 12 has said it plans to meet again with its full board next week.

“Shortly before the start of today’s Big 12 Executive Board meeting, the Conference received a letter from the Texas Attorney General’s office notifying the Conference of potential legal action from Texas Tech if the Conference pursues certain actions under its Bylaws. We are taking time with our legal counsel to understand the concerns of the state and will meet again with the full Board next week.
We moved forward with our Executive Board today in preparation for our full Board meeting on Monday. We had a good and informative discussion. Sentiment among the Executive Board was no different from what we heard from the ADs earlier this week.”
