The actions of Knicks fans after both Finals games in New York City this week have managed to nearly eclipse talk of the games themselves, dramatic as they were. Ahead of Game 5 back in San Antonio, the Frost Bank Center is ramping up security to make sure everyone can enjoy the game safely.
Several viral videos show Spurs fans being chased and heckled in the streets, a Victor Wembanyama jersey being ripped up, Knicks fans climbing on vehicles and other structures, fist fights, Knicks fans chasing after buses believed to be transporting Spurs players and even throwing eggs at the team as they arrive at their hotel. The chaos prompted condemnations from several Spurs players, actors Ben Stiller and Jerry O’Connell (both Knicks die-hards) and the mayors of San Antonio and New York City.
As the series comes home with the Knicks up 3-1, a spokesperson for the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office told MySA in an email that they are “planning on having ramped up security as we’ve had for previous home games,” including SWAT, drones, and their mobile outreach center. In a statement to MySA, the spokesperson said, “The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office is reminding the public to stay safe as the San Antonio Spurs take the court for the Finals tonight. Many residents will be out enjoying the game with friends and family, and we want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable evening.”
According to the spokesperson, people traveling to or from the Frost Bank Center or other major gatherings should expect extra heavy traffic. Planning ahead, allowing more travel time, avoiding distractions and watching for pedestrians is advised. BCSO urges those planning to drink to have a designated driver, taxi, rideshare or public transportation plan as deputies will be conducting DWI enforcement.
“At the Frost Bank Center, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office will have multiple specialized response units on site to assist our partners and help ensure a safe environment for everyone attending the game,” the spokesperson said. “These units are prepared to respond quickly if needed and will be working in coordination with local and federal partners throughout the night. The Sheriff’s Office asks that all celebrations remain respectful and safe. We are proud of our community and stand ready to support a safe evening for everyone. Go Spurs Go.”
Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 13, on ABC and ESPN.
