GRANBURY – Gary Joe Lewis, 84, of Granbury and Fort Worth, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2026, surrounded by family. He was born on March 8, 1942, in Dallas, Texas. He was the beloved son of Joby Guy and Rachel Lewis. Gary married the love of his life, Peggy Bates Lewis, on July 1, 1966. They shared 59 years of the perfect marriage and will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary in Heaven. They were the example of a perfect marriage. They worked together, traveled together, and raised their children together. They built a life full of love, laughter, and family. He was proud of and loved his family and friends deeply. He was a proud graduate of North Dallas High School and attended North Texas State University. He served in the Air Force Reserves during Vietnam and continued to serve the men and women in uniform throughout his career. He was an engineer by trade and was a partner in the family business, Fabrication Specialty, until his passing. They were awarded “Small Business Contractor of Year” by the Defense Industrial Supply Center. He was so proud to work with his grandson-in-law, Cody Edwards, his nephew, Joby Lewis, his brother, Jon Lewis, his brother, Jimmie Guy Lewis, his sister, Judy Gail Lewis and his daughter, Lisa Lewis Ford. In his thirties and forties, he did have a side gig modeling for his mother-in-law, Tommye Bates and John Robert Powers. He was often compared to Tom Seleck, which really put a spring in his step and brightened his smile. He had a great mustache and even greater hair. His willingness to serve, his compassion for others and his strong and gentle spirit were the key to his success. He made a point of learning and remembering the names of all he worked with, served with and who cared for him. He was an avid sports fan and like his wife, loved his Horned Frogs. He made it his mission not only to attend the home football and baseball games, but to travel to as many away games as possible. He was the quiet, competitive type and balanced out Peggy’s very intense competitive side. He hosted the best tailgates in Lot 6 in his big purple truck. He fed not only friends and family but all who were working in the parking lot and on the gates and the players and their families after the game as they were walking out. You would always find an opposing fan or two enjoying the hospitality. Everyone was drawn to his welcoming spirit. He found his home on the water and loved his house on the lake in Decordova and his condo in Rockport, Texas. But if asked, he would always tell you his greatest most fulfilling role was being “Didida” to his granddaughters, Natalie and Alise, grandsons, Locke and Cal and grandsons-in-law, Cody and Reilly. He attended as many recitals, sporting events, performances, and school functions as he possibly could. This included many cheer competitions. He never missed the opportunity to tell them they were the best, how much he enjoyed spending time with them and how proud he was of them. He also loved being father-in-law to his son-in-law, Craig and daughter-in-law, Megan. He is survived by his children, Lisa and (Craig) Ford, Gary and (Megan) Lewis; his grandchildren, Natalie and (Cody) Edwards, Alise and (Reilly) Clark, Locke and Cal Lewis; sister-in-law, Candi and (Ronnie) Proctor; sister in law, Sheryl Bates; sister-in-law, Lavonne Lewis; brother, Jon and (Myra) Lewis; many nieces and nephews and their families, Ken and Jane Post, James, Marlene and Brent Ford, Linda Fisher, and Marsha Gaines; and many, many special friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Peggy Bates Lewis, who passed on May 13, 2026, his parents, Guy and Rachel Lewis, brother, Jimmie Guy Lewis, sister, Judy Gail Lewis, brother-in-law, Gus Bates, III and beautiful niece, Cherie Robinson. The family would like to thank Patricia Almanza, Sharon Goldberg and College Park Rehabilitation and Care Center and Medical City Weatherford for their excellent care during his recovery and then passing. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations to be made to either First Presbyterian Church in Granbury, Texas or Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Rockport, Texas. A Celebration of Life and Memorial Service for both Gary and Peggy Lewis will be held on June 18, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. in the Champions Club on the West Side of Amon Carter Stadium, Texas Christian University.
