(KBTX) – Texas A&M men’s basketball coach Bucky McMillan’s new deal will give him $1 million more per year, according to the contract obtained by KBTX via an open-records request.
After the Aggies advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in McMillan’s first year, he was given a one-year extension which runs through the 2031-32 season. The seven-year deal, which includes the 2025-26 season, is worth a total of $29.1 million.
His base salary for the 2026-27 season is $4.2 million and will increase by $100,000 each year of the contract. That would place him approximately 25th in the country in annual salaries for the 2025-26 season, according to the USA Today’s database.
The new contract also provides a staff salary pool of at least $2.4 million per university fiscal year. His previous contract did not have a salary pool for staff.
Should A&M decide to fire McMillan without cause, the coach would be owed 80% of his remaining base salary in years 2 through 6 and 40% of his base salary for the seventh and final year. However, should the Aggies make the NCAA Tournament once between next season and the 2030-31 season, McMillan’s buyout is simply 80% of the remaining base salary.
In McMillan’s previous contract, the university’s buyout was 80% of the remaining base salary.
Should McMillan decide to leave A&M after the upcoming season, his buyout remains the same as his initial contract. He would owe the university $6 million. That number drops by $1 million over the next two years and then falls to $2.5 million in year 5, $1.25 million in year 6 and $500,000 in the final year.
In one year at the helm of the Aggies, McMillan posted a 22-12 record, including an 11-7 conference record. His Aggies finished tied for fourth in the conference and were the sixth seed in the Southeastern Conference tournament due to tiebreakers.
The Aggies finished 13th in the country in scoring offense, averaging 86.1 points per game and third in bench points per game with 34.9. McMillan and his staff had to overhaul the Aggies’ roster through the transfer portal for a second consecutive season, with five returning players from last season.
