The Houston Texans made Keylan Rutledge their first-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, and through OTAs and minicamp, the offensive lineman is already making a strong early impression on the organization.
Rutledge, who came out of Middle Tennessee and Georgia Tech, was praised throughout the pre-draft process for his combination of physicality, football intelligence, and toughness. These are traits that have carried right over into his first taste of NFL work. For a franchise that has been building one of the more intriguing young rosters in the AFC, seeing their top pick hit the ground running is an encouraging sign heading into training camp.

Offensive Line Coach Cole Popovich spoke to Aaron Wilson and made it clear that Rutledge has been everything the Texans expected, “I think it’s the same stuff that we saw in the draft process. You know, he’s tough, he’s physical. In the interview process, he’s really smart, picks up on stuff really fast. So, him and all that draft class, we’re doing really well. Even our undrafted guys. Just really happy with that whole group.”
That kind of feedback from a position coach this early in the offseason process speaks volumes. OTAs and minicamp are non-padded settings, but they reveal a lot about how quickly a player can absorb an NFL playbook and communicate at the line of scrimmage. The mental side of the game tends to separate players at this level just as much as the physical, and Rutledge appears to be checking both boxes.
It also helps that Rutledge is not the only one trending in the right direction. Popovich’s comments suggest the entire 2026 draft class has brought a level of energy and aptitude that bodes well for the Texans’ depth up front. Undrafted free agents making an impression this early in the offseason only adds to the competition and overall optimism within the room.
For Houston, the offensive line has been a focal point of roster construction in recent years as the team looks to build a sustainable foundation around quarterback C.J. Stroud. Landing a first-round talent who appears to have the mindset, work ethic, and versatility to contribute early is exactly the kind of development the organization was hoping for when they made the pick.

There is still a long way to go before the regular season kicks off, but the early returns on Keylan Rutledge are about as positive as you could hope for. The Texans will look to see that momentum carry into training camp and eventually onto the field in a meaningful way come fall.
