After weeks of voting and several adorable contenders in our Cutest Dog in Fort Worth contest, one pup stood out among the rest.

Tucker, a 12-year-old Sheltie from Colleyville, captured readers’ hearts and took home first place. Tucker will also move on to our national poll to crown the country’s cutest dog.

His sweet face, quirky habits and loyal personality made him a clear favorite in the poll.

Here’s what to know about Tucker.

Tucker Jefferson Cosmos has been part of Wanda Cotter’s life since 2013, when she adopted him shortly after retiring.

“I wanted a dog, and I had fallen in love with Shelties,” Cotter said. “My daughter-in-law’s family had always had them, so I started looking and met Tucker when he was just two weeks old. He’s been my best friend ever since.”

Now 12, Tucker is described as friendly but a bit of a homebody. He enjoys barking at vacuums, trash trucks and anything that squeaks.

Cotter jokes that he’s “not much of a watchdog” since he barks only if someone knocks, never if they walk right in.

What makes Tucker special?

Tucker’s biggest accomplishment came when he was just a year old.

He earned his Canine Good Citizen certification through a dog club in Lubbock, becoming one of the youngest dogs ever to pass the test at that school.

“It’s a fairly demanding test, especially for a young dog,” Cotter said. “I was really proud of him.”

Shelties are known for their loyalty and intelligence, and Cotter says Tucker has always lived up to that reputation. He’s also taught her the joy of slowing down and enjoying quiet moments together.

How did he win the contest?

Cotter entered Tucker into the contest on a whim, never expecting to win.

“I just saw the post and thought, ‘Oh, my dog’s cute,’” she said. “I shared it online, and my friends and family helped vote. I wasn’t sure he’d win, but I’m thrilled people love him as much as I do.”

Now enjoying his senior years, Tucker spends most days relaxing at home, playing with new squeaky toys, and keeping Cotter company.

“He’s loyal, smart and just the best companion,” she said. “I know he’s getting older, but I’m hoping we still have a lot of time left together.”
