AUSTIN (KXAN) – A rare piece of Texas and American history went on display Saturday as part of a Flag Day celebration at the Texas State Library and Archives.
The event at the Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library Building featured one of the oldest flags in the state’s collection, a 28-star U.S. flag that flew during the time Texas joined the United States in 1846.
The flag was on display alongside a series of presentations and discussions focused on Texas history.
Visitors also had the opportunity to view the original 1876 Texas Constitution, which remains the foundation of state government today.
Organizers said the event was designed to give the public a hands-on look at key moments in Texas history while highlighting the significance of Flag Day, which marks the adoption of the U.S. flag in 1777.
The celebration is part of broader “Texas America250” events taking place across the state leading up to the nation’s 250th anniversary.
