The No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs won their opening College World Series game against the No. 6 Texas Longhorns to continue their hot streak. Pitcher Joey Volchko (11-2) delivered his best performance of the season for the Bulldogs. Volchko pitched a complete game, the first of his career, and did not allow a singled earned run in Georgia‘s 7-1 victory. Volchko struck out 15 Texas batters and allowed just four hits.
Georgia’s offense immediately got after Texas All-American pitcher Dylan Volantis (10-2), who surrendered four runs in the first inning before settling into the game. Texas had three costly errors and Georgia did a good job of capitalizing on Texas’ mistakes. The Longhorns allowed just two earned runs all game.
Georgia infielder Rylan Lujo hit a two-run home run to get Georgia off to a fast start in the first inning. Kolby Branch advanced to first on a wild pitch after striking out to help Georgia score two more runs in the first. The Bulldogs never trailed all game and scored three more runs in the seventh.
Lujo drove in another run in the seventh with a double. Kenny Ishikawa helped score two more runs with a single. Georgia struggled a bit with runners in scoring position and hit just 2-11 in those situations.
The win over Texas is Georgia’s first College World Series win since 2008. Texas is the third-highest seed remaining in the field and faces an elimination game against No. 7 Alabama on Monday.

Georgia is slated to face Oklahoma, who is coming off a 9-0 win against Alabama. Georgia will play Oklahoma at 7 p.m. ET on Monday, June 15.
