Data provided by TomTom offers real-time and historical traffic insights around all 16 World Cup host stadiums across the U.S., Canada and Mexico, allowing users to track congestion patterns, identify hot spots and compare how host cities are managing the influx of fans.
Traffic at the Houston Stadium (NRG Stadium) area began building as early as 6 a.m., when congestion levels reached about 35 percent, according to TomTom’s analysis. The morning rush, however, was relatively short-lived, with congestion easing by around 8 a.m. before a much larger surge developed later in the morning.
By 10 a.m., congestion levels had climbed to roughly 67 percent—61 percent above the usual congestion level at that time. Roads surrounding the stadium appeared to see significantly heavier volumes as fans made their way to the venue hours before the noon kickoff.
The Houston Chronicle reported in late May that traffic generally surges anywhere between 20 and 40 percent in the area of large sporting events (Houston Texans games at NRG frequently start at noon on Sundays, as well). The traffic fluctuation suggests many fans arrived to the stadium early, likely heeding suggestions from organizers to allow extra time for parking, security screenings and traffic.
The midmorning spike gradually subsided around noon, but that lull was temporary. Traffic began building once more around 2 p.m., hitting a congestion level around 66 percent as the match concluded and thousands of attendees left NRG Stadium.
Around 3 p.m., TomTom was reporting a live total of 32 traffic jams. While congestion built up on surrounding roadways Sunday, the METRO Red Line was also feeling the pressure. Social media users shared images of shoulder-to-shoulder crowds aboard trains around 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., with Jay Jordan of Axios Houston comparing the packed cars to a can of sardines.
Houston is scheduled to host a total of six more World Cup matches, meaning Sunday’s traffic could serve as a preview of what locals and out-of-town visitors may encounter again on future match days near NRG in South Houston.
