San Antonio-area drivers headed through the Texas Hill Country should prepare for daily closures along Texas 46 next week as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) begins new safety work on a crash-prone stretch of the highway between Boerne and Bandera.
Traffic will be reduced to one lane along the 11-mile stretch between Interstate 10 in Boerne and Texas 16 near Pipe Creek, with daily closures and delays expected.
The work comes after months of pressure from residents and county leaders over safety concerns on the narrow two-lane highway, which has seen hundreds of crashes in recent years.
In April 2026, leaders from Bandera and Kendall counties formally declared the roadway “unsafe” and inadequate, urging TxDOT to make improvements.
TxDOT previously told MySA that 244 crashes were reported along this portion of Texas 46 between 2021 and 2025, including six fatal crashes. Agency data shows unsafe speeds, failure to control speed and driver inattention were among the major contributors.
The agency has already invested about $2 million in safety improvements along the corridor, including rumble strips and additional warning signs. The agency also plans to spend another $7 million to design intersection upgrades at several high-crash locations in both counties. Those projects are expected to begin in late 2027.
As for next week’s work, McCall urged drivers to plan ahead.
“We encourage drivers to drive safely [through] the work zone and look for alternate routes if possible,” McCall wrote.
