Supermarket News unveiled on Tuesday, June 9, its inaugural Super50 Supermarkets List, a ranking system based on factors like customer satisfaction, technology use, loyalty program attributes and labor satisfaction. That analysis awarded H-E-B bronze — and the Texas versus California rivalry continues with a West Coast competitor crowned with the top honors.

California-based grocery chain Trader Joe’s took home gold as the No. 1 grocery chain in America, with specific praise for its “tightly curated mix of products” and its “neighborhood boutique” shopping environment. Trader Joe’s, now home to more than 600 stores across 42 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., has more expansion plans coming down the pipeline, per the report.

Second place belonged to none other than Publix Super Markets, a Lakeland, Florida-based grocery retailer. Alongside its silver status, Publix is the fastest-growing supermarket chain among more traditional chains within the market sector, Supermarket News noted, with the Florida company adding 42 new stores to its repertoire in 2025 alone.

“The company emphasizes a holistic approach to customer service, defining it in terms of high standards it sets for store cleanliness, product assortment and other attributes that extend beyond the helpfulness that its workers are known for,” the report added.

H-E-B, dubbed the “de facto hometown grocery chain of Texas” in Supermarket News’ analysis, received specific kudos for its “expansive assortments that are tailored” to individual markets across the Lone Star State.

“The company has also become known for its in-store food service offerings, with restaurants such as True Texas BBQ and True Texas Tacos, featuring the retailer’s popular store-made flour tortillas,” the ranking noted.

H-E-B’s quadruple-threat status, as defined by Supermarket News, is its ample savings, quality, store experience and product assortment.
