Heavy rain across San Antonio led one school district to delay the start of classes Monday. Harlandale Independent School District notified families by email that schools would open at 9 a.m. on June 15 as severe weather moved through the area.
“Due to a flash flood warning and hazardous road conditions in portions of the San Antonio area, Harlandale ISD will delay the start of all summer school programs, including ACE camps and summer activities,” the district said in an email.
They go on to say that transportation services will also operate on a delayed schedule to accommodate the later student start time.
“District officials will continue monitoring weather conditions and will provide additional updates if necessary. The safety of students and staff remains the District’s top priority,” the email read.
Several roads are already closed across San Antonio due to high-water including multiple westbound lanes are closed on Highway 90 at Cupples Road due to flooding across three lanes, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. According to the National Weather Service, San Antonio remains under a Flash Flood Warning until 10:45 a.m. A Flood Watch remains in effect for South-Central Texas from 7 p.m. this evening through 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Heavy rainfall is expected across the region, with some locations potentially seeing more than 8 inches of rain. Forcasters say rainfall rates could overwhelm drainage systems and trigger dangerous, life-threatening flash flooding.
