EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — The Rio Grande Cancer Foundation has introduced a local initiative called BroVember, aimed at raising awareness about men’s mental health and cancer.

Ted Escobedo from the foundation explained that BroVember evolved from the No Shave November movement, which focused on men’s health and cancer awareness.

“BroVember started several years ago as an evolution from November, the No Shave effort that was trying to raise awareness for men’s cancers and men’s health,” Escobedo said.

This year, the foundation is promoting a new campaign called “We Thought They…” by offering free pins as a reminder for everyone to take care of their health.

“It’s just a reminder telling people to take care of themselves, not just men, but everybody,” Escobedo noted. The campaign ties into a website, queethathe.org, which provides practical health tips for men.

Escobedo emphasized the importance of breaking the taboo around discussing men’s health issues, particularly serious diseases like cancer.

“One of the problems in dealing with men’s health issues is that men, one, don’t like to talk about health, particularly not cancer, not prostate cancer or any other type of really kind of serious disease,” he said.

The foundation aims to provide support and encourage open conversations about health in a way that resonates with the El Paso community.
