Saturday, Nov. 1 marked one month since the federal government shut down. As a result, there has been uncertainty around federal programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
The United States Department of Agriculture announced no SNAP benefits would be issued Nov. 1, saying “the well has run dry.” A federal court, however, has ordered the Trump administration to continue funding the SNAP program. The administration has been ordered to tell the court on Nov. 3 when this funding will be restored.
Organizations around the city have been preparing to address a rising need for food. Here are some resources you can access or support in our neighborhood:
The Jewish Family Service Food Pantry is located at 5402 Arapaho Road. Options are based on the North Texas Food Bank’s nutritional guidelines and include kosher items. The pantry is open on the first and third Mondays of the month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. as well as every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Appointments are required to visit and can be made here. The Jewish Family Service Food Pantry serves families and individuals in the following ZIP codes: 75209, 75220, 75225, 75229, 75230, 75231, 75234, 75238, 75240, 75243, 75244, 75248, 75252, 75254, 75287, 75001, 75006, 75007, 75010, 75011, 75042, 75080, 75081.
