After San Antone Cafe & Concerts closed, the next big tenant at the church building was Frank, a fancy-ish hot dog restaurant that extended from the now-shuttered Frank in Austin. After a few years of preparations, Frank’s San Antonio location finally opened in 2016, impressing locals with its elevated bar fare that often nodded to the neighborhood’s German heritage.

However, the market for quirky glizzies wasn’t strong enough for Frank to survive in Southtown, and the restaurant folded in January 2018. The Austin location would follow soon after, as would complaints that the fleeting hot dog restaurants were behind on taxes and employee paychecks.

Bouts of emptiness have taken over the church-shaped property in subsequent years, with the occasional pop-up or performance piece taking place under the banner of Communion, an entity that uses the space as a venue. Its most recent event, Unbound: a Community Movement Encounter, was held on March 22, 2026, and it’s fairly safe to say that no hot dogs or ghosts were in attendance.
