CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — As crews continue to dismantle the old Harbor Bridge, officials, working in coordination with the United States Coast Guard and Port of Corpus Christi industry partners, expect to lower the main span this fall.
The Harbor Bridge Project (HBP) announced on Tuesday that it is expected to lower the center span over the Corpus Christi Ship Channel. The process of dismantling the old Harbor Bridge is a 386-foot-long, 5.9-million-pound.
In a Facebook post, HBP said over 100 panels will be extracted from the anchor span to balance the weight being removed from the center span. Temporary sway frames and lateral bracing that look like brown stars have been installed inside the main truss on each end.
Officials said the old pieces of the Harbor Bridge will be transported to Ingleside for recycling and reuse.
