The FIFA World Cup kicked off on Sunday in Arlington, and even if individuals are not attending matches, the tournament could still affect getting around the city.
AT&T Stadium, renamed Dallas Stadium during the matches, is hosting nine matches between Sunday and July 14, including five group-stage matches, two Round of 32 matches, one Round of 16 match and a semifinal.
Many of the upcoming eight matches – the next on Wednesday – happen on weekdays when commuters are on the road.
Ahead of the next matches, The Shorthorn compiled information related to parking and road closures.
UTA lots will not be used for parking for World Cup matches, parking communications manager Larry Cummings Jr. said in a message.
Road closures on match days include AT&T Way, Nolan Ryan Expressway and Statler Boulevard at CentrePort Station, according to a map from the North Texas Council of Governments. Pedestrian and fan routes may affect access around the stadium.
The typical projected peak times for World Cup-related traffic are from 6:30 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. on weekdays, according to the council. A full list of peak travel periods is available on the council’s website.
Cummings said most traffic congestion is expected to stay within a one-mile radius of AT&T Stadium and along major highways, such as Interstate 30 and State Highway 360.
Marilyn Craig, 60, said she was initially nervous about World Cup parking and wait times, but the process went smoothly for her, with plenty of direction and support from workers.
“You can rely on the people that are working here,” Craig said. “If you’re tempted to try to get out of line or do something else, just trust the process because it works.”
The City of Arlington Parks, Recreation and Culture Department is offering paid parking for up to 200 vehicles at two city-owned lots for all World Cup matches hosted in the city, according to a city press release.
Parking rates range from $25 to $125, depending on the location and match date. Payment may be made in advance through the approved vendor’s site or by credit card on match days. No cash will be accepted.
The lots are the Division Street Lot, located on 1722 East Division St, and the Meadowbrook Park Lot, located on 1300 East Dugan St, according to the release. The lots will open four hours ahead of the matches and close two hours after the matches.
