The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) announced it is moving forward with plans to replace the State Loop 289 bridges that cross Slide Road, one of the city’s major commercial corridors.
Loop 289 serves as one of Lubbock’s primary traffic routes, carrying commuters, shoppers and commercial traffic around the city. Slide Road is one of the area’s busiest retail corridors, home to major shopping centers, restaurants and businesses.
According to TxDOT, the existing bridge structures have reached the end of their usable lifespan and will be replaced with a single bridge structure built within the existing footprint of Loop 289.
The good news for drivers: TxDOT says there are currently no plans to add travel lanes or relocate ramps as part of the project.
The less exciting news is that construction will eventually require detours and temporary closures in certain areas.
Before moving forward, TxDOT is asking the public for feedback through a virtual public meeting and an in-person open house scheduled for Thursday, June 18.
“The purpose of this meeting is to provide information and receive comments on the proposed project,” TxDOT said in project materials.
The virtual meeting will become available online at 4 p.m. Thursday and remain accessible through July 13. An in-person open house will also be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the TxDOT Lubbock District Headquarters Training Center.
