SOCORRO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Socorro Independent School District leaders delivered a State of the District address ahead of the district’s board meeting Wednesday night, with Superintendent James Vasquez, where he highlighted student achievements, recognized staff, and outlined what’s next for the district.
The district has been under a conservatorship by the Texas Education Agency since 2024.
In April, TEA conservators announced they plan to step away from Socorro ISD in about two months.
Conservators Michael Hinojosa and Andrew Kim also provided an update on the status of the conservatorship.
“It’s been quite a journey over the last two years. When I got here, it was a hot mess,” said Hinojosa.
Hinojosa also spoke about cutting school programs.
“I love programs. I love mariachi, I love everything. But if you can’t afford it, you can’t have it,” Hinojosa said.
Hinojosa said the conservators won’t leave just quite yet. They still have to deal with some issues.
“There’s one issue left with special ed, a former person didn’t fulfill their responsibilities, and the TEA is tough,” he said.
Budget issues are also on the agenda for the board meeting.
The district is expected to adopt a balanced budget.
