Most of the planned Juneteenth-related events in Houston and Galveston scheduled for Friday and Saturday remain a go, even as sporadic rain continued throughout the region Wednesday morning.

The region was under weather advisory for most of this week leading up to June 19, and many of the Juneteenth celebrations – including Arts the District Houston Juneteenth Celebration, 2nd Annual Juneteenth Block Party and Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom at Miller Outdoor Theatre at Avenida Houston, BLCK Market at Night: 7th Annual Juneteenth Celebration – are currently scheduled to go on, according to the event websites.

The Emancipation Park Conservancy – which operates and maintains Emancipation Park under contract by the city of Houston – confirmed that all of its Juneteenth events scheduled for Friday will go on as scheduled as of Wednesday.

In Galveston, the birthplace of Juneteenth, the various celebrations were scheduled to go on as planned, including Juneteenth Parade & Picnic and Galveston Island Juneteenth Music Festival & Fireworks, but its subject to change, said Mary Beth Bassett of Visit Galveston.

Events listed as part of the 19 Days of Juneteenth are also expected to be held, according to the Juneteenth Houston website. Juneteenth Houston is a citywide non-profit focused on Houston’s historic districts.

The Arts District Houston, an umbrella collective overseeing community and local business-affiliated events in Houston’s historic First and Sixth Ward expected to take place Friday and Saturday, organizers and groups are in a watch and wait pattern.

Lets Do This Houston confirmed in an email that outdoor Juneteenth-related events scheduled for Friday and Saturday – including The Reunion at Emancipation Park, Juneteenth on Almeda, Juneteenth Night Light Bike Ride on Friday remain on schedule.

Juneteenth cancellationsJuneteenth Houston’s 5th Annual Celebrate Freedom Fest at Emancipation Park

Organizers originally cancelled the June 5 events due to weather, and planned to merge festival activities with the Juneteenth The Reunion at Emancipation Park on Friday, June 19, currently still on schedule.

Freedom Fest is held annually at Emancipation Park, bringing seven historic Black neighborhoods – Independence Heights, Fourth Ward, Third Ward, Fifth Ward, Sunnyside, Acres Homes, and South Park together to honor the legacies of Juneteenth.

Citywide Spades Tournament

This event has been postponed for the safety of vendors and guests. The event will be merged with series of June events throughout the month, according to an Instagram post.
