The City of Corpus Christi is hosting its second free sandbag distribution of hurricane season Saturday, June 27, at Cabaniss Athletic Complex — and officials are stocking up after last week’s supply ran out more than an hour ahead of schedule.
The event runs from 1 p.m. until supplies last at the complex, located at 3061 Saratoga Blvd. The city is aiming to distribute around 10,000 sandbags, up from the 8,000 handed out at the June 13 event, which drew nearly 1,000 vehicles and exhausted the supply by 10:45 a.m. — well before the scheduled noon end time.
A city public works official said heavy rainfall in recent days underscored why the events matter.
“As we’ve seen over the recent days, with heavy rainfall over a few days, it could cause some localized flooding,” the official said. “So these events are just trying to be educational to the public to get them ready for the potential of maybe a severe storm.”
Officials say residents are limited to eight sandbags per vehicle per pass through the line, but are welcome to re-enter as long as supplies last. Drivers are asked to clear out their truck beds or trunks before arriving to help speed up distribution.
The public works department said it will use message boards at the event to update residents on supply levels in real time.
Saturday’s distribution is free and open to all Corpus Christi residents.
