Texas DPS trooper killed in line-of-duty crash in Childress County

  • June 18, 2026

CHILDRESS, CO., (KFDA) – A Texas DPS trooper was killed in a traffic crash while on duty in Childress County on Wednesday.

According to DPS, Trooper Sergio Romero, 27, was attempting to conduct a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 287 near Childress around 4 p.m., when a truck-tractor semi-trailer pulled out in front of his patrol vehicle.

DPS says Romero’s patrol unit collided with the semi and he died at the scene.

In a statement, DPS Colonel Freeman F. Martin said the agency is mourning the loss of one of its own.

“Trooper Sergio Romero served the people of his community and the state of Texas with courage, integrity and selfless devotion. Our hearts break alongside his family, friends, fellow Troopers and all who loved him. We will never forget the ultimate sacrifice he made in service of his fellow Texans.”

Before joining DPS as a member of Class B-2025, Romero served with the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.

He was assigned to the Childress area as a Highway Patrol trooper.

Romero is survived by his wife, Francisca, and their two young sons.

DPS says Romero is the 244th DPS officer to die in the line of duty since 1823.

The crash remains under investigation.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
