As big banks have moved into North Texas, smaller banks, in a sense, are moving out.
Dallas-based Dallas Capital Bank will become the latest local bank bought by an out-of-state firm. The bank announced Wednesday it had entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by MidFirst Bank, headquartered in Oklahoma City and the largest privately held bank in the U.S. The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2026.
Dallas Capital Bank has $1.2 billion in assets, while MidFirst Bank has $42 billion, per the latest FDIC data.
“Dallas is one of the most dynamic banking markets in the country, and Dallas Capital Bank has built exactly the kind of relationship-focused culture that defines the MidFirst experience,” said Todd Dobson, CEO of MidFirst Bank, in a release. “Dallas Capital Bank’s team is recognized for delivering exceptional personalized service, and by bringing our organizations together, we will be able to serve the Dallas market in an even greater way.”
Dallas Capital Bank’s news follows a series of mergers and acquisitions that swept through North Texas and beyond last year. Veritex Bank, with approximately $13 billion in assets, was acquired by Ohio’s Huntington Bank, while Vista Bank, with approximately $2.5 billion in assets, was bought by Denver-based National Bank Holdings Corporation, both in deals announced last year. The most notable such acquisition came when Ohio’s Fifth Third Bank merged with Comerica Bank in an $11 billion deal, creating the country’s ninth-largest bank.
As Dobson noted, these moves give outside banks access to one of the country’s fastest-growing regions. MidFirst Bank already has locations in Houston, Dallas and San Antonio, including a heavy investment in Houston over the past few years.
“MidFirst and Dallas Capital Bank share a fundamental belief that clients deserve a banking partner who knows them, responds quickly, and makes decisions locally,” said Doug Hutt, Chairman and CEO of Dallas Capital Bank, in the release. “We have spent over a decade building that kind of bank here in Dallas. Joining MidFirst means our clients will continue to receive that same personalized approach, now with the full resources and scale of the nation’s largest privately owned bank behind them.”
