A 21-year-old woman has been arrested after Corpus Christi police investigated a violent assault that was captured on video and widely shared on social media.

According to the Corpus Christi Police Department, officers became aware of the incident after a video depicting an assault began circulating online. The assault occurred on May 23 in the 300 block of Interstate 37 Access Road, near a Stripes convenience store just outside downtown Corpus Christi.

Police said the victim did not initially report the incident.

Detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigations Division launched an investigation and were able to identify both the female victim and the suspect.

Investigators identified the suspect as Kelly Castillo, 21. Authorities obtained an arrest warrant charging Castillo with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

The Corpus Christi Police Department’s Gang Unit arrested Castillo on Tuesday, June 17, without incident.

3NEWS has obtained the viral video that led to renewed attention surrounding the case. The footage appears to show a violent altercation in the parking lot area near the business.
