Heat Advisory for southeast; Cold front brings strong winds, storm chances

  • June 19, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A cold front marching through the northern portions of the viewing area Thursday morning will bring very strong northerly winds, along with a split forecast and rain chances by evening.

KCBDKCBD(KCBD)

As of 8 a.m., the front was pushing southeastward with low clouds accompanying it. The slow progression will create a dramatic temperature divide across the area, with some locations experiencing another dangerously hot day while others see relief.

Areas off to the southeast will see the most intense heat, with highs potentially reaching 107°. A Heat Advisory remains in effect from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday for this region. Meanwhile, the northern portion of the viewing area will see cooler highs near 80°, with most of the South Plains in the 90s.

Overnight lows Thursday will range from the mid-60s to mid-70s as winds diminish and skies clear.

Storm chances late Thursday into Friday

The main threat arrives late Thursday evening through the overnight hours, primarily across areas off the Caprock. Moisture levels will increase significantly, and while the atmosphere will remain capped during the day, evening forcing should trigger thunderstorm activity.

Storms that develop could pose risks of large hail, strong winds, and locally heavy rainfall. A few storms may become severe, particularly through the early morning hours Friday.
