Texas football picked up its second five-star commitment for the 2027 recruiting cycle when coveted cornerback John Meredith III picked Texas over Texas A&M and Alabama.
Meredith joins receiver Easton Royal of New Orleans as the two current five-star recruits for 2027. With 16 commits for the 2027 class, Texas ranks No. 8 in the nation in the 247Sports composite’s ratings.
Meredith, currently at North Crowley, announced his commitment to Texas on Friday live on ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Meredith is the nation’s top-ranked cornerback for 2027 and the state’s No. 2 overall prospect. He had announced that Texas, A&M and Alabama were his finalists.
Meredith’s status for the upcoming season remains in limbo after the District 11-6A executive committee ruled him ineligible for varsity play in 2026 for transferring for athletic purposes, according to the Dallas Morning News. He moved from Euless Trinity to North Crowley in the offseason, joining a North Crowley program that won the Class 6A Division I state title in 2024 and was a 12-2 regional finalist last season.
Meredith can appeal to the University Interscholastic League’s state executive committee and try to become eligible to play for North Crowley next season. If that doesn’t work, he could try to return to Trinity or transfer elsewhere, possibly to a private school or out of state.
