Dan, a 19-month-old male giraffe, debuts in El Paso Zoo habitat

Visitors to the El Paso Zoo & Botanical Gardens have a new face to look for on the giraffe habitat.

Dan, a 19-month-old male giraffe, has arrived at the zoo from Lincoln Children’s Zoo.

The zoo said Dan has completed quarantine and is now getting to know Gigi, the zoo’s resident female giraffe.

Zoo officials said the addition is meant to expand the zoo’s giraffe family and strengthen the community’s connection with giraffes.

Dan was selected through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan, a program designed to support healthy and genetically diverse giraffe herds for future generations.

The zoo said its participation in the Species Survival Plan and partnerships with other zoos nationwide are part of its commitment to protecting wildlife, supporting sustainable animal populations and inspiring the community to care for species locally and around the world.
