INGLESIDE, Texas — A South Texas veteran’s legacy was recognized Saturday during a national ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Raúl Alvarado, a Vietnam veteran originally from Donna who spent much of his life in Ingleside and Corpus Christi, was inducted into the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund’s 2026 In Memory Program.

The program honors veterans who returned home from the Vietnam War and have since passed away, ensuring their service and sacrifice continue to be remembered.
Alvarado was one of 32 Texas veterans recognized during this year’s ceremony.
His daughter, Zelina Alvarado Rittiman, said the honor was a powerful reminder of the impact her father had on those around him and the men he served alongside.
“I was speechless, in all honesty,” Rittiman said. “We already think so highly of our father and adore him, but to know that the sacrifice he was willing to make for the men he served with and for our country — he just had a deep love, a heart, all heart. That is a beautiful example.”
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund’s In Memory Program was created to recognize veterans whose names are not eligible for inscription on The Wall because they survived the war and later died from other causes.
Family members say Alvarado’s inclusion in the program ensures his service, sacrifice and dedication to his fellow soldiers will not be forgotten.
