After sharing her thoughts on the recently announced Ye concert at the Alamodome on social media, Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones is facing backlash from fans in San Antonio.
On Saturday, June 20, the San Antonio mayor wrote a short statement she shared first on her X account before posting on other platforms that she is in support of canceling the artist formerly known as Kanye West’s concert taking place on July 4. “Military City USA should not host someone with a record of hate speech and antisemitic comments in a city-funded facility like our Alamodome-not ever, and certainly not on July 4th, our Nation’s 250th birthday,” she wrote. “Standing up to antisemitism is exactly what it takes to achieve a more perfect Union.
Jones is referencing several instances over the last few years where Ye has posted antisemtic statements and shown support of Naziism – most recently in February 2025 – that caused him to be blocked from entering both the country of Australia and the United Kingdom for the eventually cancelled Wireless Festival in London. In 2026, Ye apologized for his antisemtic behavior by taking out a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal, where he said he loved the Jewish people and attributed his behavior to his bipolar disorder, which he said caused him to “[lose] touch with reality.”
Since the announcement on June 14 that Ye would make his appearance in the Alamo City, there has been mixed reaction. And with the mayor’s statement, those same detractors and fans of Ye are speaking out about her statement.
“The fact that it nearly sold out in 2 days says that the people of San Antonio disagree…” Instagram user brian_l8 said in the comments of her post. “As someone in the military that wants to see ye its disappointing and weird that you’re trying to speak for us about this situation,” another user, sean2sick said. “Focused on the wrong stuff. This has the potential of bringing the city money from more outside tourism,” user manny_0824 added. And the folks on X were sharing similar sentiments in the replies.
Meanwhile, some on both platforms are in agreement with the San Antonio mayor, stating the concert should have never been planned.
“Plus Kanye just makes a** music nowadays so it’s a double win to cancel his show,” user bagel.salamii said on Instagram. “Nobody’s flying to to San Antonio to see Kanye west,” user 2bakes said against another reply for Ye’s show. “glad to see our mayor knows what actual antisemitism looks like,” user lobster_spice said in the comments. “When someone plainly says they are a literal nazi, it’s usually best to believe them and act accordingly. this isn’t complicated.” And the posts against him continued on X.
The July 4 concert is still on as of this writing. Tickets remain on Ticketmaster with standard admission tickets starting at $127.50.
