LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – As expected it was a hot and sunny Father’s Day on the South Plains. In Lubbock the high temperature soared to 106 degrees, just two degrees short of the record on this date in 2023. Most of the region also reported afternoon maximum temperatures above 100 degrees. The cooler areas, at or below 100 degrees, were located in the northeast areas of the region.

Looking ahead to Monday, I expect us to get some slight relief with afternoon highs in the 90s, a few clouds and northeast winds. The cooldown will be due to a weak cold front. The maximum temperatures should stay below 100 degrees, except in the southwestern South Plains. Folks in the southern communities will still be hot due to the later arrival time for the front in those areas.

Only slim chances exist for showers or storms along the frontal boundary, however models do indicate the potential for showers and storms with limited coverage on Tuesday.
The week will be hot but likely remain near or below 100 degrees until later in the week.
