LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – High Point Village is expanding to provide independent living options for its villagers and others like them.
Nathan Bryant, executive director at High Point Village, said the new residency aims to address concerns families have about long-term care.
“Families have questions when their villagers are aging or those caregivers are aging, where my loved ones will live, who will take care of them, and we hope to answer some of those questions with the community,” Bryant said.
The project will be built on 14 acres and will feature 24 lots with a variety of housing options to meet different needs.
Bryant said the first residents will be adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities that have independent living skills. Over time, more accommodations will open for villagers who need more assistance.
“But there is setups where villagers can lease rooms maybe with a supportive roommate living them that can teach them and show them what it’s like to cook for themselves, wash their own clothes, do some of the things that we learn while we are growing up, that these villagers just never had the opportunity to do,” Bryant said.
Safety and support
Bryant said while the residence is designed to promote independence and community, safety will remain a top priority.
“We are going to put an amazing supportive staff around them as well, so when a family is ready to move their loved ones out here, they have peace of mind, the same peace of mind that exists when their villager or loved one is living down the hall, we want to provide that same peace of mind for when they move out here,” Bryant said.
Turning vision into reality
Bryant said the vision was able to become a reality because of help from donors and the community.
“Those volunteer hours, those dollars, every contribution that’s made out here whether its attending an event or coming and volunteering, truly is multiplied in a way that seventy one of the most amazing people feel that love each and every day, and it really has created I think the most beautiful place in the entire city,” Bryant said.
Bryant said homes will start to go up in September, with the first residents expected as early as January.
