LUBBOCK COUNTY, Texas (KCBD) – Lubbock County commissioners approved funding for the Slaton Economic Development Corporation to help revitalize its downtown.
The $25,000 investment will help offset costs for building upkeep and sidewalk repair.
An outside consulting group is helping boost small business visibility and plan events with the chamber of commerce, including the city’s annual festivals.
Commissioners unanimously approved the grant after declining to fully fund the project last year. They said they are pleased to see the city has put up money of its own first.
County leaders also approved a $20,000 grant to support Lubbock’s Youth Orchestra facilities and instructors.
Now in its 39th year, the orchestra teaches children from across West Texas to perform. With more than 150 students coming in this year, it is preparing them for high school and collegiate symphonies.
The orchestra raised tuition this year to help cover its costs. Administrators said the grant will brighten the students’ futures.
