Gov. Abbott reappoints Dr. Surendra Varma to Texas Medical Board review committee

  • June 23, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Gov. Greg Abbott has reappointed Dr. Surendra Varma to the Texas Medical Board’s District Three Review Committee, according to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

The Texas Medical Board protects public health and safety by setting standards for the practice of medicine and helping ensure quality care for Texans.

“We have been fortunate to have Dr. Varma and his dedication to academic medicine for over 50 years at our university, not only in this leadership role at the School of Medicine but as an excellent physician for our patients,” said John C. DeToledo, executive vice president for clinical affairs and School of Medicine dean at TTUHSC. “He has a great commitment to medicine, and he will continue to bring a wealth of expertise to the Texas Medical Board District Three Review Committee.”

Varma has worked at TTUHSC since 1974 and established the university’s Pediatric Endocrinology Division that year, the university said.

TTUHSC said Varma has played a key role in physician training and graduate medical education and currently holds several leadership and faculty roles, including University Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics, associate dean for Graduate Medical Education and Resident Affairs, Grover E. Murray Professor, Ted Hartman Endowed Chair in Medical Education and vice chair of the Department of Pediatrics.

He also oversees residency and fellowship programs across all three TTUHSC campuses and previously served as vice chair of a Residency Review Committee for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the university said.

“It has been my privilege to serve the people of Texas,” Varma said. “I am grateful to Governor Abbott for continued confidence in me. I am grateful also to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center leadership in allowing me to serve in organized medicine associations.”
